Preview Wednesday’s Round of 16 Play

The last 16 players take to the court Wednesday in singles, as well as seeds #2 and #3 in doubles, including the Indian-Chinese pairing of Sania Mirza and Shuai Peng who make their 2017 Wuhan Open debut.

#9 seed Agnieszka Radwanska opens play on Centre Court against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty. The 2012 Wimbledon finalist is looking for her first title win this year and hopes to exceed her best ever Wuhan Open result, a quarterfinal appearance last year. While the two have never met, the match has a potential to be a good one, with the 21-year-old Australian having a career-best year, having beaten Venus Williams, Garbine Muguruza and Elena Vesnina this year on her way to a career-high ranking of world #37 after a third round appearance at the US Open.

Next on is #3 Karolina Pliskova, playing against her second Chinese opponent in a row after defeating Chinese #2 Shuai Zhang in three tough sets yesterday.  She faces Qiang Wang, the first ever home player into the third round here, having beaten US Open champion Sloane Stephens in an impressive display earlier. The 25-year-old from Tianjin has already beaten top 20 players Elena Vesnina and Kristina Mladenovic this year.

Third on Centre is the feel-good story of the tournament, qualifier Monica Puig. Since winning the Rio Olympics last year, the Puerto Rican has had disappointing results. She also comes into the Wuhan Open with a heavy heart, as Hurricane Maria devastated her home island of Puerto Rico last week. She takes on French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, a winner of her second-ever title last week in Seoul. The two have met twice before, with the Latvian victorious both times on clay.

Finishing out the day session is #1 Garbine Muguruza taking on qualifier Magda Linette.

In the night session, #7 Dominika Cibulkova, last year’s Wuhan Open finalist, goes up against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, who dispatched Angelique Kerber in the first round.

In other matches, Sania Mirza and Shuai Peng play against Sevastova / Vekic on the fourth match on Court 1 while Court 2 sees two Chinese players in action as Yifan Xu and Gabriela Dabrowski take on the US-UK pairing of Melichar / Smith (first match), followed by Zhaoxuan Yang and Shuko Aoyama going up against Kichenok / Rodionova.
