Muguruza, Kerber, Ostapenko, Pliskova and Halep set to wow in Wuhan

This year’s Wimbledon winner Garbiñe Muguruza, reigning US Open champion Angelique Kerber, 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko, World No.1 Karolina Pliskova and World No.2 Simona Halep will all be part of this year’s star-studded line-up at this year’s Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open.

The US$2,666,000 WTA Premier 5 tournament, held at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre from 22-30 September 2017, is set to feature some of the biggest global names in tennis.

“I’m very excited to come back to Wuhan and play in front of the Chinese fans again. They’re always so much fun to play for because as players we can really feel their enthusiasm,” said former Wuhan runner-up Muguruza, who lifted her first Wimbledon trophy just a few weeks ago. “I’ve played well in Wuhan in the past and it’s a tournament I always love to play.”

Seventeen of the world’s Top 20 players have signed up to play in Wuhan, including eight of the world’s Top Ten. The list includes six Grand Slam singles champions (Muguruza, Kerber, Ostapenko, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Petra Kvitova and Samantha Stosur).

Two-time champion and tournament favourite Kvitova returns to the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open this year to defend her title. Wuhan crowd favourite Kvitova lifted the trophy in 2014 (the tournament’s inaugural year) as well as 2016 and is sure to receive a warm welcome back to Wuhan.

Chinese tennis legend Li Na, who was born in Wuhan, is a global ambassador for the tournament.

Co-Tournament Director Mr Zhu Jianbin said: "We have brought some of the best female athletes in the world to Wuhan as part of our plan to grow this event into one of the best-known tennis tournaments in the world. It's a wonderful opportunity to showcase the city of Wuhan as a focus for international sport, as well as a chance to see women's tennis at its very best.”

It's going to be another very, very strong field in Wuhan and there will be so much for the fans to enjoy on and off the court.
